Cyprus
Following official confirmation of FMD in Cyprus earlier this year, 42 farms have reported infection with FMD. Initially identified in the Larnaca region, the disease has since spread to Nicosia. With Cyprus having the fourth highest livestock density in the EU, over 16,000 animals have been culled, and the government has announced a €28 million support package (co-funded by the EU) to provide compensation, income support, and help farmers rebuild production.
In response to the outbreaks, Cypriot authorities have launched a vaccination campaign. 500,000 vaccines were provided by the EU, with over 85% of Cyprus’ 83,000 cattle population vaccinated, and 50% of the 327,882 sheep population. Authorities hope the vaccination campaign will be complete by the end of March.
Under EU rules, when FMD is detected on a farm holding, all susceptible animals must be culled. However, following pressure from the farming sector, the Cypriot Presidency asked the Commission to limit culling to only the infected animals. This request was rejected by the Commission.
FMD was also reported in the Turkish controlled north of Cyprus in December 2025.
Greece
In March, Greece confirmed its first case of FMD in 25 years. Detected on the island of Lesvos in the mountainous Pelopi region, 9 animals tested positive. Strict movement restrictions have been introduced.
FMD in Germany, Slovakia and Hungary
In 2025, Germany (1 outbreak), Slovakia (6 outbreaks) and Hungary (5 outbreaks) reported infection with FMD.
Germany regained FMD free status in April 2025, Hungary on 10 September 2025, and Slovakia on 31 October 2025, after implementing successful control measures.
